STEP THREE: Being equal and having equal rights

1 min read

Being equal and having equal rights are related but not the same thing.

What is the difference between "being equal" and having "equal rights"?

Being equal means that all people are of the same value as human beings. It’s the idea that everyone deserves respect and dignity, no matter their differences. However, people are not exactly the same in abilities, skills, or circumstances. For example, some people are taller, some are faster, and some have more resources or opportunities.

Having equal rights mean that everyone is treated fairly under the law and has the same opportunities to succeed. It doesn’t matter who you are or where you come from—equal rights ensure that everyone has access to the same freedoms and protections, like the right to vote, work, or go to school.

In short, being equal is about our shared human value, while equal rights are about fairness in how we are treated and what opportunities we have that help everyone have a fair chance in life.
